4:1 毯螅人以利法回答说，
Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
4:2 人若想与你说话，你就厌烦吗。但谁能忍住不说呢。
If we assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can withhold himself from speaking?
4:3 你素来教导许多的人，又坚固软弱的手。
Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.
4:4 你的言语曾扶助那将要跌倒的人。你又使软弱的膝稳固。
Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.
4:5 但现在祸患临到你，你就昏迷，挨近你，你便惊惶。
But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.
4:6 你的倚靠不是在你敬畏神吗。你的盼望不是在你行事纯正吗。
Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?
4:7 请你追想，无辜的人有谁灭亡。正直的人在何处剪除。
Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?
4:8 按我所见，耕罪孽，种毒害的人，都照样收割。
Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.
4:9 神一出气，他们就灭亡。神一发怒，他们就消没。
By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.
4:10 狮子的吼叫，和猛狮的声音，尽都止息。少壮狮子的牙齿，也都敲掉。
The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
4:11 老狮子因绝食而死。母狮之子也都离散。
The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the stout lion’s whelps are scattered abroad.
4:12 我暗暗地得了默示。我耳朵也听其细微的声音。
Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof.
4:13 在思念夜中，异象之间，世人沉睡的时候。
In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men,
4:14 恐惧，战兢临到我身，使我百骨打战。
Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.
4:15 有灵从我面前经过，我身上的毫毛直立。
Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:
4:16 那灵停住，我却不能辨其形状。有影像在我眼前。我在静默中听见有声音说，
It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,
4:17 必死的人岂能比神公义吗。人岂能比造他的主洁净吗。
Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?
4:18 主不信靠他的臣仆，并且指他的使者为愚昧。
Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:
4:19 何况那住在土房，根基在尘土里，被蠹虫所毁坏的人呢。
How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth?
4:20 早晚之间，就被毁灭，永归无有，无人理会。
They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it.
4:21 他帐棚的绳索岂不从中抽出来呢。他死，且是无智慧而死。
Doth not their excellency which is in them go away? they die, even without wisdom.
约伯记4参考
好人必享通，恶人必灭亡，以利法的立论是否正确？
4:7-8 以利法所说的有些是对的，有些是错的。那些犯罪惹事的人最终将受到惩罚是不错的，但清白的好人会免受苦难就不对了。
圣经中记载和引用的资料都出于神的选择。但有些记载只是叙述人说过的话或做过的事，并不是要人去仿效。圣经中提及的罪恶、失败、邪恶的思想和对神错误的观念都是神圣经话语中的一部分。但我们不要因为它们是圣经中的记载，便去遵循那些错误的例子。圣经给我们教导和学习的榜样，教我们知道哪些是该做及不该做的事情。以利法的言论便是我们要努力避免的，因他只凭个人经验对别人妄下推断。
在神的真理中加入自己的见解时需小心……
4:12-13 以利法虽然声称他的异象来自属天的启示，但这很值得怀疑，因为后来神批评以利法误解了他（参42:7）。不管这异象来自何方，在4章17节中已作了总结。表面上，这句话完全正确：一个人无法与神相比，也不应该试图询问神的动机和行为。然而以利法持著这个观点，在后面加以发挥，加入了自己的见解。他的结论（参5:6-7）表明他对约伯的痛苦理解得很肤浅。这种情况也很容易发生在教师、辅导员和好心的朋友身上，他们的话以部分神的真理开头，然后却偏离了。我们不应以个人的观点及片面的生活经验去理解、限制神的作为。
主的臣仆、使者就是天使了？怎么……
4:18-19 天使是愚昧的吗？我们要记住这是以利法的话而不是神的话。我们要小心地考查以利法的意见，来建立我们对属灵世界的认识。再者，愚昧一词的原文只在这里出现过，它的意思并不明确。我们可理解为这里是指堕落了的天使，来维护以利法的话的可信度。这一段经文并不是要论述天使，以利法说的是罪人远在神和天使之下。不过他并不理解神降苦难的更深远的目的。
