1:1 大流士王第二年六月初一日，耶和华的话藉先知哈该，向犹大省长撒拉铁的儿子所罗巴伯和约撒答的儿子大祭司约书亚说，
In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,
1:2 万军之耶和华如此说，这百姓说，建造耶和华殿的时候尚未来到。
Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD’s house should be built.
1:3 那时耶和华的话临到先知哈该说，
Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,
1:4 这殿仍然荒凉，你们自己还住天花板的房屋吗。
Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste?
1:5 现在万军之耶和华如此说，你们要省察自己的行为。
Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.
1:6 你们撒的种多，收的却少。你们吃，却不得饱。喝，却不得足。穿衣服，却不得暖。得工钱的，将工钱装在破漏的囊中。
Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.
1:7 万军之耶和华如此说，你们要省察自己的行为。
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.
1:8 你们要上山取木料，建造这殿。我就因此喜乐，且得荣耀。这是耶和华说的。
Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD.
1:9 你们盼望多得，所得的却少。你们收到家中，我就吹去。这是为什么呢，因为我的殿荒凉，你们各人却顾（原文作奔）自己的房屋。这是万军之耶和华说的。
Ye looked for much, and lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.
1:10 所以为你们的缘故，天就不降甘露，地也不出土产。
Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit.
1:11 我命乾旱临到地土，山冈，五谷，新酒，和油，并地上的出产，人民，牲畜，以及人手一切劳碌得来的。
And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands.
1:12 那时，撒拉铁的儿子所罗巴伯，和约撒答的儿子大祭司约书亚，并剩下的百姓，都听从耶和华他们神的话，和先知哈该奉耶和华他们神差来所说的话。百姓也在耶和华面前存敬畏的心。
Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the LORD.
1:13 耶和华的使者哈该，奉耶和华差遣对百姓说，耶和华说，我与你们同在。
Then spake Haggai the LORD’s messenger in the LORD’s message unto the people, saying, I am with you, saith the LORD.
1:14 耶和华激动犹大省长撒拉铁的儿子所罗巴伯，和约撒答的儿子大祭司约书亚，并剩下之百姓的心。他们就来为万军之耶和华他们神的殿做工。
And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,
1:15 这是在大流士王第二年六月二十四日。
In the four and twentieth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.
哈该书1参考
先知哈该的信息与其他大多数先知有所不同──
1章 犹太人在公元前538年从巴比伦归回耶路撒冷后即重建圣殿，但由于敌人的诸多阻碍，重建工作迟迟未能完成。直至公元前520年八月，也就是停工超过十五年之后，哈该重提旧事，鼓励百姓再起来重建圣殿。哈该应该是在被掳期间在巴比伦出生，其后于公元前538年与所罗巴伯同回耶路撒冷的（参拉1-2章）。除哈该外，撒迦利亚也是鼓励百姓重建圣殿的先知（参拉5:1）。
当时犹大的领袖是──
1:1 犹大省长所罗巴伯和大祭司约书亚是建殿工程的首脑。他们虽然已成功地重建祭坛，但建殿工作进展缓慢。于是哈该鼓励这两位杰出的领袖和归回的众人去完成这项工程。
百姓为自己的事忘记了神的事，是不应该的，连神都忘了，就更不应该了，我是否也会……
1:2-15 百姓遭外邦人敌对，灰心失意之下不但放弃建殿，连神也遗忘了。于是哈该鼓励百姓完成建殿工作。他的言论令百姓回心转意，重拿工具，继续完成停顿已久的工程。
若人只会为自己打算，后果──
1:3-6 神质问他的子民：何以你们住在豪华的房屋内，却让圣殿躺在废墟中？圣殿是犹大人与神关系的焦点，但仍是一片荒凉。百姓没有重建圣殿，反而努力美化自己的家。百姓越为生活打算，便越贫乏，因为他们忽略了自己的属灵生命。同样，我们若把神放在首位，我们的百般需要他都会供给我们，否则，我们怎样努力也是徒劳无功的。只顾肉体的需要，而忽略与神的关系，人只会步向灭亡。
百姓追求物质，却总不得满足，问题是……
1:6 百姓没有让神居首，只顾建造和装饰家园，结果总觉物质生活贫乏，无法得著神的福气。其实摩西早已预言忽略神的人会有如此下场（参申28:38-45）。
神的事重要，还是我的事重要，说起来容易，做起来难……
1:9 犹大人的问题在于轻重不分。其实，我们在工作、家庭和事奉等方面亦可能犯同一毛病。我们或会看重职业、家庭、假期、甚至娱乐消闲过于神。你看甚么最重要呢？神又在你生命中占甚么位置呢？
百姓把安全感建在农产丰收上，结果……我呢？
1:11 谷物、葡萄和橄榄，都是当时以色列主要的农产品。百姓靠赖这些农产品给他们安全感，而不去敬拜神。结果神要用旱灾来毁灭他们的生计，叫他们回转归向他。
对神的话听时感动，没有行动，这是不是我的表现？
1:14-15 哈该首次宣讲神的话语后二十三天，百姓便动工重建圣殿。先知的话能在这样短的时间内得到回应，委实少见。我们听道后往往说：“这一点精采极了，理应付诸实行。”但一步出教会，就把该做的事忘记了。我们也要像以色列百姓一样坐言起行，每当听到精采的讲道或教训时，应问问自己可以做些甚么，然后订下具体的计划来付诸实行。
